EN 1.7218 (25CrMo4) Precision Seamless Chromium-Molybdenum Steel Tube

Material

The grade 25CrMo4 (also designated EN 1.7218) is a high-quality chromium-molybdenum alloy steel developed for engineering applications requiring good hardenability, strength, toughness and weldability. It is fully suitable for precision seamless steel tubes through cold or hot forming processes. The material is often supplied in a quench & temper (QT) state, or in softened (annealed) condition for further processing. 

Specifications

  • Material grade: 25CrMo4 / EN 1.7218

  • Product form: Precision seamless steel tube (cold drawn or hot finished)

  • Delivery conditions: e.g., annealed (+A), quenched & tempered (+QT)

  • Typical tube OD/WT: according to customer drawing/specification (for example precision tube OD X mm, wall thickness Y mm)

  • Surface finish: as-drawn, peeled, turned, ground, or other precision finishing as requested

  • Heat treatment: Hardening and tempering appropriate to tube size and application

Key Characteristics

  • Excellent balance of strength and toughness: After quenching & tempering, tensile strength can reach 900–1100 MPa (depending on size) and yield strength in the 700 MPa range. 

  • Good hardenability through tube wall — makes it suitable for thicker walled tubes and critical parts.

  • Good weldability and machinability for a quenched & tempered alloy steel. 

  • Precision tube production enables tight tolerances, smooth surfaces and improved performance for demanding applications (e.g., hydraulic cylinders, high-pressure tubes, structural shafts).

  • Chromo-moly construction: the combination of Cr and Mo provides enhanced strength, creep resistance (for elevated temperatures) and good fatigue behaviour relative to plain carbon steels.

    • Concern: Will the tube achieve the specified tensile and yield strengths after heat treatment? Our response: Yes — we provide certified mill test reports showing tensile strength ranges of ~800-950 MPa in many cases for QT condition for given diameter ranges. 

    • Concern: What about dimensional accuracy and surface finish for precision tubes? Our response: We specialize in cold-drawn and ground precision tubes with tight tolerances, minimizing further machining.

    • Concern: How about weldability and machinability? Our response: 25CrMo4 provides good weldability for an alloy steel and is readily machined in the annealed condition; when QT treated we can still supply pre-machined tubes or near-net shapes as needed. 

    • Concern: Is the material sourcing and standard compliance assured? Our response: We supply full documentation, traceability and ensure compliance with applicable EN/ASTM/ISO standards (see “Standards” section).

  • Customization: We can provide special finishes (peeling, grinding, straightening), custom lengths, and supply precision seamless tube ready for assembly or further processing — reducing customer cost and lead time.

Applicable Standards

  • EN 10083-3: Alloy steels for quenching and tempering — 25CrMo4 (1.7218) is included. 

  • EN 10216-2: Seamless steel tubes for pressure purposes — non-alloy and alloy steel tubes with specified elevated temperature properties. 25CrMo4 appears as a grade for alloy steel tubes. 

  • EN 10297-1: Seamless circular steel tubes for mechanical and general engineering purposes (non-alloy and alloy steel tubes) — includes 25CrMo4. 

  • EN 10305-1: Steel tubes for precision applications — cold drawn seamless tubes. 25CrMo4 (1.7218) is listed.

  • EN 10269: Steels and nickel alloys for fasteners with specified elevated/low temperature properties — 25CrMo4 listed. 

  • ISO 683-2 (and ISO 683-18): Heat-treatable steels, alloy steels and free-cutting steels — includes 25CrMo4. 

Application Fields
